It was a well-modulated 1 kW daytimer using the first broadcast
transmitter I designed and built, type accepted as the
Johnson Associates RBJ-1C (really). For its power level and
frequency it got out quite well. I kept the ground-system
well mowed to minimize dielectric losses.
Rich Wood got his radio start at WDEW as a teenager. He
sounded quite mature and professional. He had moved from
mowing lawns to on-air work when Ray Dowell, PD, caught
him "playing radio" in the studio after hours.
Cheers,
Richard B. Johnson

The license that was WDEW is now WNNZ, but there's little similarity
between the two: WDEW was a daytimer on 1570 in Westfield, Mass., with
something like 500 watts that barely even reached the 15 miles to
Springfield. (Rich Wood or Richard Johnson can probably correct me on
the power level.)
