While I've never actually lied.....
Reading <mumble mumble> radiation <mumble mumble> PLEASE STEP BACK !!
and
Taking field radiation readings on......
OH CRAP !
and go to leave immediately.
The first has produced no followup questions.
The second has gotten me in trouble. LOTS of followup, and
they'll usually call the police if you're not there to answer.
Don't do that one.
Later, I've asked if they remember that "Can you hear me now?" guy
from the commercials ? Then when they say yes, well, that's actually me,
but they got an actor to play me, and smile.
Gawd help you if it turns out they are/were a verizon customer, so I
don't do that anymore. verizon managed to ruin even that.
In recent years, I've taken to wearing one of those utility worker safety vests.
Almost never get asked anything anymore.
When I do, it's usually something like "Water department ?"
I do carry business cards for whatever the station is that I'm measuring for,
though, and after *briefly* explaining what we're doing, refer to the number on the card.
Military installations, ALWAYS ask !! Usually you'll get an escort.
It also often pays to notify the local police that you're out there.
Some folks never ask you, they just call the cops.
