I have spent a lot of time with a FIM tied to a computer from an airplane
taking fs readings a fixed radius from stations. GPS autopilots make flying
the radius a snap. However, I have found that the fs readings bear very
little resemblance to what you read on the ground. I have found that there
is a lot of line of sight to AM signals. I can hear stations at 1000 feet
that I cannot hear on the ground. For the most part, I have given up on
this project. I have aerial fs data on a lot of Florida radio stations
plotted. Now I have used a helicopter to run radials. Most of it on ranch
land here in Florida. But have never used the data from the chopper itself.
Always landed and took the readings on the ground.

After that conversation, had it been me, there would have not been a
third time. Hang the FIM from a helicopter from 1/2 mile up if
necessary.
yow!
