some years back I was troubleshooting a lack of positive modulation in a
BC-1G (not knowing that the 'morning man', who fancied himself a tech, had
been in it earlier, and put a pair of very soft 833A's in the mod sockets)
anyway, decided to check the AC volts on the modulator grids
Simpson 260, set on 250VAC scale, black lead grounded, red lead (in my only
smart move that evening) taped ot a wooden yardstick
I reached in, read the rear one, then reached for the front mod grid cap,
forgetting that while the RF tubes had their caps arranged P-G-G-P, the mods
were
P-G-P-G
WHAM ! smoked the range switch, the multiplier resistor, and all that was
left of the fuse was the two metal end caps
