This has been an enlightening solid state/tube exchange.  
If the  station in question can't afford a new 1kw box, how are they  going 
to afford a reliable 5 or 10kw box in the future.  Paul you are to be  
commended for trying to assist.
For what it's worth, I have a BE 1 kw solid state rack mount box with low  
miles on the upper end of the dial (field tunable from 1300-1580 with no change  
of components) for 7 grand.
