This was my solution:

It cost me about $35. You use the included software to give it a
fixed IP address, and put it on your network.
The software also creates a virtual port that makes it look as though
the unit is attached to your computer as a regular COM port.
Hyperterm and all other software that expects a serial port will see
it as a normal port.
I use it to control/program/change the macros on a remote system
controller. If you have a way to make it routable, the serial device
could be on the other side of the world so long as network latency
didn't kill you.
