Many years ago I accidentally set off the Police, Fire and Bomb Squad
alarms at WGBH, Boston. I had to get in to sign the station and
network on. The security guard had just begun his rounds and left the
security area door open. I pushed some funny sliding things that
locked in place. I figured one of them would open the door. The lock
was to prevent a miscreant from shutting the alarms off. After
finding those didn't open the door I pushed the rest and the door released.
Every safety service arrived. The bomb squad had a little trailer
with what looked like a monster cannon ball covered with chains. Had
there been a bomb they would have placed it inside this thing. It
wouldn't have ridden in the front seat of the truck.
What made them overly cautious was the fact that we'd been receiving
bomb threats when we started running "Say Brother." It was one of the
first Black TV shows. We got so may threats that we were allowed to
decide for ourselves whether or not to evacuate. Most of us stayed
where we were.
I didn't hear about it until the next day. The guard was ready to
take my head off. My boss was a 60's "radical" and thought it was the
funniest thing he'd ever seen. I kept the job.
