I seem to recall some stations were dropping channel position altogether and
simply calling themselves, for example, "Fox Chicago"

Seems to me like that makes the most sense, with cable, satellite, DT, and
analog channels potentially being different.  Although I do appreciate
DirecTV's "Virtual" local channel numbers, which reprogram the receiver to
match the local numbers.
