My favorite Paul Harvey story.
Around 1986 I was at KSTK-FM, Wrangell, Alaska doing some engineering.
I happened to hear Paul Harvey on the air! Now that was unusual, as
KSTK was a Alaska Public Broadcasting station.
Researching the program, I was told that "he had always been on the
station". Well, it turned out that somehow Paul was on the air when
Wrangell had an AFRTS station. When they closed down and KSTK went on
the air somehow the program followed. In the telco room I found a
Tellabs system labeled ABC/Paul Harvey. It was a full time ABC program
feed. This went on for years. Then some auditing wonk from ABC started
calling every six months or so asking about the program. Explanations
were given, questions were asked, people on both ends of the
conversation were polite, phones were hung up. This went on until
sometime in the early nineties when the program line was suddenly
discontinued. A Alascom (the Alaska common carrier) tech told me that
he had received a work order to turn the circuit off.
So for many years, Paul Harvey was on a public radio station, the
station covered the commercials with PSA's and everybody was happy, with
the exception of a very puzzled auditing staff at ABC.
The listening public was not happy!
