I worked with Paul Harvey from time to time and he was a wonderful man. If
you'll indulge me, I'll tell you a few of my favorite stories.
My first job in radio all those years ago was at an ABC affiliate and we
aired both his newscast and The Rest of the Story. Like most people I have
many good memories of hearing that reassuring voice tell me what was going
on that day, and trying to guess who The Rest of the Story was about before
the reveal.
Several years later, I was working at WMAQ in Chicago and had just taken a
job with ABC Radio Networks in Dallas. Before I left Chicago, my
friend Bill Karambelas who was Mr. Harvey's engineer, offered to introduce
me to him. Bill said we had several interests in common (sky diving and
scuba diving). Mr. Harvey warmly shook my hand and invited me into the
booth while he did his newscast. He didn't want me sitting at the end of
the long booth where there were chairs, he wanted me to pull up a chair to
his table with the mics so I could be right next to him. During the breaks
we would talk. I wanted to talk about his experiences, after all he dove on
the Atocha ship wreck! No. He wanted to ask all about me. We was very warm
and down to earth. A wonderful man.
When I worked for ABC, I was tasked with replacing the phone system in his
office. (He was not happy with that, but it was shared with other ABC
departments and they needed the change.) Mr. Harvey remembered me from 5 or
6 years before (he even asked me about my dog!). His nickname for me was
"Trouble". He'd ask, "How are you today Trouble?". One of the times when I
was there, he was done with his show and he and Angel were leaving for the
day. I was in the lobby as they walked by. Here were these two very elderly
people, slowly walking arm in arm as they were leaving. The love they had
for each other was palpable; it filled the room. It was the most wonderful
experience.
Then a few years later as I was leaving ABC (and broadcasting) for my
second career in photography, Mr. Harvey surprised me and talked about my
leaving ABC on his show! It once again reminding me what a wonderful man he
was. Very warm and kind. I will miss him.
Margaret
