A few years ago there was a proposal to do it the opposite way -- by
keeping the carrier at 100% but increasing the modulation up to 200%.
Mike Dorrough presented this as "Advanced Modulation System" (AMS)
but it got caught up in patent issues in 2003.  AMS was supposedly
double-sideband and compatible with C-Quam AM Stereo and IBOC.
