If you think THAT'S bad - try this...
Many AMs have a really HUGE ERP...
Like the Class B 250 watt station that has an ERP of 1000 watts... over 
the COL; due to the gain of the array.  Yep; puts the same signal over 
the COL as if the station were running 1 kw ND, with a birthday candle 
250 watt TX.  4-tower inline array, off the end.

It's all in how you THINK about it....
A multi-bay FM is a phased array, just like those 12 towers along the 
highway... just shorter, is all... (and the DESIRED nulls are straight 
up and straight down.  No need for lots of signal at the base of the 
tower; the transmitter cabinet radiates enough to handle those 
listeners.....<wink>  and there's no-one on the Moon to listen, 
anyway... I think... =-O )
