Autotune has been used for quite a while. Britney Spears uses it a LOT I
understand. 
It really does work-too bad it wasn't available when Linda McCartney was
singing with Wings.
I used to have a soloed tape of just her singing backup. BOY was she awful!

Read the story in TIME today in fact.  They claimed it was a plug-in program
called Auto-Tune.  I believe this is it.
