Small Claims Court works. In Massachusetts, filing such a claim
costs $35.00.
The hearing is informal, handled by a Clerk Magistrate, and often
doesn't even take up space in a courtroom because there are
"negotiators" available who will try to get both parties to
settle. Often a notice from a court is just the incentive for
your bill to be moved to the top of the "must pay" basket.
If the bill is paid as soon as the defendant receives a notice
to report to small claims court, a telephone call to the court
from the plaintive is all that's necessary to quit the case.
