I'm with you on this one.  Having used the on-board cards and the lower-end 
pro cards, there are noticeable differences.  Biggest one I see is the 
amount of noise.  If you don't have the budget, on-board cards would get you 
by, but you really can't go wrong for spending the extra cash on a MidiMia 
or a Delta 44.  Both cards can be purchased for under $150 retail or less on 
eBay if you play your cards right.
