Keith, I have an AM with Audio Science ASI-4300. Generic white box 
Celeron 1.8, 256m Ram
 
Driver V3.04.03

BSI WaveStation 3.0.60

I've not had what you describe. Most audio is WAV but not all. I play 
some long-form MP3's 128k every day.
