Verify that the heatsink on the CPU(s) has not loosened up and fallen
off in transit. This has been a major reason why a new computer will
run for only a few seconds.

For the keyboard problem, verify that the keyboard is connected
to the keyboard jack and not the mouse jack! This is another
problem I've encountered and it's not "dumb" because it may
be mis-color-coded! You have it in the correct jack if the
Num-Lock LED will toggle.
