Yes, it had to do with the then-lack of "diameter equalization".

As you approached the center of the disc from the outside and groove 
velocity changed, there was a gradual loss of high-end response.  ETs 
intended to be played back-to-back would have one of each pair recorded from 
the inside out so that the audio sounded the same when you made the switch 
from one ET to the other.
