Soundstream (likely not the same company that now uses that name) had
commercial products that used very high sample rates and Delta
Modulation. That equipment was used to record some very fine
sounding Telarc records.
dbx and Mitsubishi had them as well. I think 3M also used Delta
Modulation, but it came along later, 1982.
Then again, he Compact Disk didn't come out until late 1982. Sony
and Philips joined together to develop it in 1979, so the technology
existed.
SACD does mostly fix the problem.
