Forgive me:  "maybe" ???

Broadcasters have a *very* potent tool at hand, something much of the 
public wishes it had.

It is called a microphone.

Properly using that tool, many stations have affected local community 
life for the benefit of all.

True - one station isn't likely to get Sprint or any national company 
to change their pricing or other policies. But, a lot can happen when 
several stations - and, yes, networks - get together and focus on 
something. One quick example: iPhone pricing.

It takes ... erm ... effort.
