I don't remember seeing files THAT lousy! 160Kbps is what I consider bare
minimum for broadcast.
As for present-day downloading for Professional Broadcasters, there is the
PlayMPE service, which is quite excellent. They offer both, high quality
compressed files, and raw WAV. The compressed files are like 320Kbps MP3- very high
quality. PlayMPE has replaced CD distribution for quite a few stations and
artists. I used it for several years at WFIF.
As for a bunch of technophobic listeners, you're probably right, but only to
a point. There were a few who do have computers & e-mail, who had discovered
some of these artists online.
