Not to detract from your original point, but I would hope that these 
subsequent applications would be rejected for failing the 'obvious to one 
skilled in the art' test.  Not that I'd have a lot of hope -- the PTO has 
granted boatloads of patents in the last twenty years (particularly in the 
software realm) that IMHO should never have made it past that test.
