When Barry and I visited the 980 (now WTEM) site a number of years ago,
everything was triplicate. But it's changed hands twice since then and
the studios moved. What was a duplicated STL is now a two-hop STL, etc,
etc. Maybe the 10kW rig may have gone elsewhere - leaving just 50kW day.
and 5kW night rigs. As someone has said, the tower insulators and
tuning houses are probably eight feet above ground, but it's in a flood
plain. Did the water reach the building? I don't know.
The fact is that a WTEM CE would have quite a number of other stations
as well, each at a different location. Comment from the proprietor of DCRTV:
"Dan Snyder's DC radio operations present a particular challenge for a
chief engineer and his staff. There are six radio stations using six
different, very spread-out transmitter sites: 980 Hyattsville, 570
Germantown, 1260 Silver Spring, 730 Mount Vernon, 94.3 Warrenton, and
92.7 Prince Frederick. Imagine just having to drive from site to site in
heavy DC area traffic. No wonder Snyder's having trouble finding a CE....."
