I happen to like the SM-58s as well in the field.  They avoid a lot  
of feedback issues when doing a remote in front of an audience.  They  
don't sound great, but it is a very good trade off.

Get headphones you like that have a large mic case at the end of the  
boom.  Then go out and buy some SM-58 elements and graft them into  
the boom.  I have done that to all sorts of things, including putting  
them into wireless hand mics.

If you want to do some fabrication, you could make an aluminum boom  
for Koss Pro 4 AA headphones.
