The livability (viability?) of many engineering disciplines
has radically changed in recent years. For instance,
in light of the fact that my recent trip to Copenhagen
was successful, I was just informed that I'm going to
be sent there again to do some more work that they
refuse to hire engineers to do locally because the
cost is too high.
In effect, I'm being punished for performing well
on the last trip that I took because our subsidiary
was too cheap to hire the help they needed. The
parent company offered my services to get them
out of a crisis and now those "free services"
continue to be offered because I'm single, am
expected to have no personal life, and work
relatively cheaply.
That's business. The fact that I do the stuff
nobody else wants to do allows me to keep
those paychecks coming, though... Gotta
look at both sides of the coin!
