I have a General Electric H-116 console radio here in the lobby. Big fella,
about three and a half feet high, with 'piano-key' style tuning preset
buttons, dating from around 1937. It has what is recognizably an RCA-style
phono plug on the back of the chassis, which can be selected for playout by
depressing one of the keys (marked 'Phono-Tele') on the front panel.
So it would appear that the 'RCA phono plug' has been around since at least
the mid/late 30s.
Cheers!
