It's a very tough job when you don't know anything about your
products. A year or so ago I noticed a dramatic change at Circuit
City. It turns out they fired their highly paid (relatively)
salespeople and brought in inexperienced kids. Then wired them up
with radios so they could call the queen bee if the customer had a
question. I guess paging systems are useless with the 11 systems
playing different Hip Hop at deafening levels drowning them out.
The folks at Best Buy can, at least, still tell you what the HDTV
resolutions are. Incentives are gone, since they don't pay
commission. That's all the more reason manufacturer spiffs are
important to salespeople.
One of two stores in my market that actually had knowledgeable
people, Tweeter, closed many of their stores.
