Unfortunately, many people still haven't learned the lesson of multi-site
redundancy. The WTC proved it twice, and the 2003 Northeast blackout
proved it yet again. I think a lot of people throught they had it easy
once Y2k turned out to have the impact of a gnat sneeze. In that case, we
did an adequate job of preparing for the predicted, but the unpredicted
will still catch us off-guard time and time again.
In our case, any station with separate studio and transmitter facilities
should plan for what to do when two of those locations goes out of
commission: emergency studio facilities at the transmitter, as well as
emergency transmission facilities at the studio. Even a wire strung
across the roof is better than no signal at all -- and one mike, a CD
player, and a Radio Shack mixer is better than no audio at all.
