Don't both HP and Dell still sell most of their models with XP installed 
as a no-cost option?  I know I bought a Dell with XP from their small 
business line not long ago.  I think the Dan Strassberg, who used to 
follow this list, bought an HP laptop with XP within the past year.

IIRC, these XP options are ONLY available by direct purchase from the 
manufacturer, never from a retailer.

Perhaps Paul can hive off his present HP to someone who wants Vista and 
use the money to get a machine with XP installed.

Just a thought.
