I have had more problems with cable select then any other IDE thing. Don't use
it! Set one drive up as a master and the other as a slave.

Problem solved.

Friends don't let friends use cable select.

It sounds to me like your HD may be toast as well. In fact, are you 
SURE the MB is bad? Maybe it was just the HD.
