Even Win-2000/professional, when used with current service
packs, will call home periodically if It finds itself on the Internet.
Nowhere in its documentation is even a hint that it does this.
Even something as "harmless" as reporting the license number
and name of the computer has absolutely frightening consequences
if that capability is misused --which it will be, since it exists.
No operating system, to which the name Microsoft is attached,
should be used for anything that requires security and
professional integrity. It is merely a toy and should not be taken
seriously. Learn Linux/Unix and be secure in the knowledge
that only what you have installed, enabled, and know about,
is running.
If (when) the government wants to break into your computer
they will have to take physical possession. It can't be done
over the Internet. Even then, they will find only what you
have put on the computer, not something that some
unknown party has filled your hard disk with.
