HeyWhatsThat.com will plot high resolution terrain profiles and shadow
maps based on the SRTM terrain database.

The following example shows visibility from 6 ft AGL on Mt. Soledad
near San Diego, but you can enter any desired coordinates and
elevation under "New Panorama".  Turn on "Visibility Cloak" to shade
all areas with optical line-of-sight, or enable "Show Profile" in the
menu at upper right for a radial elevation plot to any clicked point
on the map.

The FAQ provide much more info.  I've found this to be an excellent
tool to help in selecting suitable FM transmitter and ham repeater
sites.
