Oh, it can happen. Someone who shares (or "borrows") someone else's computer
signs up. Or the subscriber moves on and gets deleted on their end, so the list posts
get catchall-routed to someone who hasn't seen one before.

Happened on a list I was involved with. Curiously, it was a radio station who objected (rudely and emphatically) to the linguistic list's "gibberish" (which I'm sure it looked
like to them). The problem was the objector's address didn't line up with any of our
subscribers, but I managed to suss it out by noticing the related domains of the
addees.

In this case, the addee's domain is the computer club of a retirement village, so one can only imagine.

Another list I helped with appends a one-line unsub instruction on every forward to
avert the inevitable "please cancel" posts.
