The world became manageable again when I picked up a pair of "reading

Ophthalmologists are well-acquainted with special prescriptions for
special occupational needs.

After basic "refraction" (correcting one's eyes for distance vision,
including any differences between eyes and any astigmatism), you can
tell the dr at what distance you want to work, and they will compute
an "addition" for that distance.
