Ophthalmologists are well-acquainted with special prescriptions for
special occupational needs.
After basic "refraction" (correcting one's eyes for distance vision,
including any differences between eyes and any astigmatism), you can
tell the dr at what distance you want to work, and they will compute
an "addition" for that distance.
My spectacles come in four flavors:
1) progressives for driving at night (perfect vision at a distance,
slight + diopter for reading the dashboard and other operator controls),
2) progressives for general use (perfect vision at a distance,
significant + diopter for reading text),
3) "single vision" for computer use (set to 20 inches), and
4) "single vision" for reading in bed (set to 9 inches).
All start with the same basic numbers.
