I understand how the speculation of them being hot could
start. However, having sold stuff on eBay in the past, you get a lot
more interest and bidding by starting at a low price rather than a
high price. Part of the secret is knowing how to list items. Quite
often a seller may not really know an item and may even misspell the
items name. Of course you take a chance that it may go for lower
than hoped for. Even an unknown "reserve" price can be discouraging
to many prospective bidders. It's a gamble.

I know of people who have purchased equipment from legitimate dealers
for projects that never happened and then wanted to get whatever they
could for the equipment to cut their losses. One fellow I know
bought a new Zephyr eXtream with three Sennheiser HMD-25
headset/mics, and a SKB case. His program failed to materialize and
wanted to sell the equipment as soon as possible on eBay for whatever
he could get for the package. I helped him get very close to what he
had paid for the equipment.
