He was also the Mayor of Cinci as well.  And from what I heard, was 
re-elected twice serving 12 years total before going on TV as an anchor.

I have met Mr. Springer and he is quite the intelligent man. A lawyer 
by training and a quick study otherwise. I respect him for those 
accomplishments.

His syndicated radio program was by in large a serious discourse 
program and one which I wish was still in production.  Despite his 
other less ctritically acclaimed productions, his radio show was very 
much on topic and reflective of real events and topics of the 
day.  We in fact aired him live when he was on before the shake up in 
2006. We had a sell out remote of his show here and clients knew his 
radio show wasn't related to the TV production.

Whether the anchors who protested were right or wrong in their 
criticism of Mr. Springer doing a commentary, they were accurate that 
his appearing on the station would degrade the newscast due to his 
association with the TV "program" bearing his name which at the time 
didn't acknowledge some of the guests and stories were fiction and 
simply acts. I didn't and don't consider the TV show to be 
vulgar.  It is simply trash TV entertaining people at their lowest 
possible level.  And that's what the anchors and others at the 
station wanted nothing to do with.

One item to keep in mind, if there is 1 in 300 people with a weird 
story like those on Jerry or Maury Povich, that's over 1 million 
people here in the USA.  At 10 guests a show, that's something like 
100K  non-repeating shows they can do. And the story lines are never 
ending either as people turn over.  He might have the worst show on 
TV.  But he's making a small fortune laughing all the way to the bank 
and his buddy stage manager/security guy Steve now has his own 
confrontation show of a similar nature.

Nope...he's no dummy....  Besides, he's something like 70 and he can 
do what he wants these days.  Even run for the senate in Ohio.  Which 
as I understand makes the incumbents nervous....  seriously.  He 
would not be a wallflower in such a race.
