540 is dead and buried ... a long time ago.
It was reliably reported that the ENTIRE purpose for (Saul) Levine
putting this station on-air, with its Tx site a full EIGHTY-SIX miles
distant from its COL, Costa Mesa, was to obtain an ex-band allocation
by use of the so-called "stereo preference" for such allocations.
Levine was, indeed, successful, and he almost immediately "flipped"
the ex-band allocation to another group, reportedly for middle double
digits of millions, and which was later moved to an L.A. suburb
through a "major change" (became KFOX, Torrance), on the basis of a
"first aural service" to that 'burb.
Levine was "shopping" the towers and Tx of his 540 well before the
sale of the (uncompleted) x-band allocation was completed (was
installed, ultimately, on the east tower of KWKW).
The prospective purchaser did not "bite", and, instead, installed all-
new equipment.
Levine reportedly walked away with $30+ millions.
