Alas, the traits that make a good bean counter are the very
qualities that make seeing individual trees easy, but visualization
of the forest virtually impossible. As I have said before, there
are exceptions, but not nearly enough. Regardless, that is not
IMHO the problem.

Good accountants require direction by managers who understand
the difference between staff and line functions. Accounting,
at its best, is historical. I submit you cannot drive a car by
looking at a rear view mirror, nor a business based on the last
quarter's results.

Thus, the exceptional accountants who can look beyond technique
and procedure and visualize don't fit the role of the faithful
bookeeper which has been the accountant since the Medici invented
double entry accounting.

The real need is for general managers with understanding of all
business facets - not comprehensive, but general knowledge. In
broadcasting this is more rare than in industry because ours is
a much younger industry.
