Utterly amazing! If Dave McElhatton (the dean of Bay Area TV anchors,
also a veteran of KCBS radio) hadn't already retired, these guys
probably would have fired him, too.
I just got off the phone with a friend of mine out there, who tells me
that the tech area wasn't hit too hard. One tech was offered a buyout;
if that person declines the buyout, the least senior tech will be laid off.
I suspect the reporters won't be out of work for long, and hopefully the
same for their newsroom colleagues. Still, the sense I get over the last
few days is that CBS is absolutely gutting the heart and soul of their
O&0 newsrooms. CBS Newspath also is suffering, with at least one
reporter, possibly more, along with producers, cameramen, and truck ops
getting cut.
