I run Linux on this Dell Inspiron 640m, and run WinXP in VMware Workstation.

Works nicely.

Although, now that I have the Planet CCRMA at home packages installed on my
Fedora 7 install, professional audio production, one of the reasons I still
needed WinXP, is easily done in Linux. I'm finding Ardour, Audacity, and the
various plugins (especially the JAMin mastering plugin) do everything I used
Audition for, and they do it better. The JAMin package, in case you're
wondering, is a programmable EQ followed by a settable three-way crossover
(the crossover's bandpoints are settable) feeding three bands of compressors
followed by a good limiter. For mastering voice recordings to CD it is
marvelous; sounds a lot like a three-band Optimod would sound.

The Ardour interface will remind you of ProTools, and the JACK way of doing
things will make you feel right at home if you're used to patching effects,
synths, noise, etc in with patch cords. The documentation isn't great (but,
then again, neither is Audition's!).
