Equal time Windows Vista
The Dell Computer, with Windows Vista installed,
arrived on Saturday. I grabbed the Windows XP CDs,
just in case I needed to reinstall something that worked,
and ran out to deliver the Birthday Present. I had
previously created an Open WI-FI port so my friend
could use a Laptop computer in the apartment. This
allowed me to set up the new computer on the kitchen
table, without disturbing the one that is going to be replaced.
I am sad to report that everything worked!
I didnt like the fact that, without my permission, it called
home several times and recorded everything in the
apartment, but in spite of the awful reports about Vista,
everything, including Yahoo Messenger, purported not
to work, worked flawlessly.
The only security problem was that I needed to forcibly
tell Microsoft to connect with the open WI-FI port. For
some reason, it considered this a security threat.
The other problem was not related to Vista, but the
Norton Security software that came bundled with
the system. It required that an account be established
on Peter Nortons server so he could watch everything
that was being done on the computer, a sort of peer-
to-peer prison guard. Since I didnt appreciate having to
ask the permission of Peters server every time the
mouse was clicked, I removed the software from the
system. It will be replaced with something else.
