[BC] Absurd markups!

I have a friend in commercial food services. She advised the big profit
center in most retail fast and sit down food establishments are
beverages. Starbucks is a good example of this....with a twist.

Your typical cut of coffee is minimum 4X profit. That's after factoring
equipment depreciation, maintenance and cost of operation. Soft drinks are
5-7X if you only get one filling. That's why combo meals are set up the
way they are....

And never mind why you pay $5+ for a hard drink at most upscale eateries
and night clubs.

My wife and I were eating at one sit down casual place one evening when be
both ordered simple tap water with a lemon twist with dinner. The manager
came by and asked why we didn't order something else. We commented
everything they served was either loaded with caffeine and/or sugar. And
while we liked eating there and the dinners were of reasonable quality and
value, we didn't appreciate the fact neither could fall asleep after we ate
there until we stopped ordering something other than water. What I didn't
mention is I didn't appreciate being raped for the beverages there ($3.29 +
tax/tip for soft drinks).
