In the past 2 years, the number of physical CD's I received at WFIF steadily
declined, as I subscribed to the "PLAY MPE" service, and began downloading the
music, instead. This was a HUGE benefit to the station, because we were now
getting music that previously we couldn't because they just weren't sending
CD's to "small" stations like ours.
It truly is a win-win scenario, in that the "cost-per-copy distributed" drops
from about $1 per CD (costs of everything from manufacture to mailing) to
pennies-per-download. Suddenly, non-music intensive stations and "mon-and-pops"
in small markets have the same access to the same music that only the "big
guns" once had.
Obviously, someone had to have made exceptions for distribution to
Broadcasters, where there is no more physical media. This would also apply to consumers
who purchase downloaded music.
