I had that experience 20 years or so ago when I was living a couple of
valleys north of Death Valley. The only local FM was the 100.7 from
Bishop, and with a Yagi on the roof aimed west I could catch a
knife-edge refraction (through two mountain ranges!) from the FMs on
Cuesta Peak above San Luis Obispo. KCBX 90.1 and the 104.5 (KIQO?) were
especially strong, and quite reliable over the course of the year I
lived there.
