I finally have a broadcasting anecdote. One night the automation was
being loaded up and a syndicated program couldn't be found. It was a
small and well organized station, and the three of us did a methodical
search: All mail slots, then all surfaces, then the trays of all the CD
players and CD trays of all computers, then all drawers. Then behind the
racks and the other crannies where it could have fallen. We were
starting to sweat when we began pulling more file boxes in the program
library; having already checked the other dates (past and future) for
that time slot, we began pulling adjacent boxes along those shelves,
hoping for a misfile. We were down to about 15 minutes, and the board op
was queuing up a sub.

The PD was kind of a brainstormer with several projects going, and
nobody dared to dig into his foot-high desktop. I asked the others
when it should have arrived, and they gave me a good estimate. I chose
the most likely pile, riffed the edges to get the date range, stuck my
hand in, and pulled out the CD. They were astonished; how could I do
that?

I was once a legal secretary; one learns to quickly rummage an
attorney's office for an urgently needed paper without disorienting him
by disturbing the precise position of anything else. "Desk archaeology."
