I have to give them credit -- it takes stones to blow up a perfectly
good radio station, and that is what they are doing.
It has very decent numbers, but they think they can do better, so
they are going to give it a try. How much of the "same old stuff" do
you hear, and complain about?
The actual issue is that while it is doing well in the ratings, it is
hard to sell. So, why not try to increase the revenue by trying
something different?
I have been amused by the comments about beautiful music because it
suffers from the same problem though at the other extreme of the age
demographics. Sure, it might get good ratings, but that format is
IMPOSSIBLE to sell. Don't you think the highly researched companies
would put it on if they thought it would make money? You may have
every single 65 year old and older person listening, but what
advertisers are going to put spots on the air and Dollars on your
bottom line?
Now, three months of Christmas music is beyond what I would
personally want to hear, but I bet they do well with it. One station
in every major market does, and it is always the FIRST one on that
gets the listeners. Emmis is first to be sure in this case.
Early next year they will be into their new format, and that was the
end game from the beginning. I know many of the players, and they do
actually know radio, and they know what they are doing. I give them
a lot of credit.
