I've had good luck with the Fanfare's, especially with additional filtering
in front of them. This particular installation has another translator about 300
feet away. Between our own "wake" and the other translator's wash, the
results on a Dayton are abysmal. The good news is we already had it sitting on a
shelf. It was worth a try.
The Sangean works wonderfully at the same location, delivering a clean stereo
signal. It is amazing how well it traps out anything but the desired signal.
I could live with the audio outputs, rather than MPX out, since I have a
stereo exciter at the site. The problem is we use RDS to control our other
translators and want to do the same for this one too. Basically, I have Rio Radio
RDS detectors that look for our unique RDBS code. No code and the relay
closes. This has been the best solution to prevent hijacking and skip problems
that I've found. Unfortunately, the device needs a composite output. I spent an
hour or so with a scope probing around on the HDT-1 chassis looking for
something that looked like a composite signal. I found low level audio in several
places, but not what I needed.
I'll probably be ordering a Fanfare or Inovonics translator receiver.
Sometimes "cheap" isn't worth it, even if it is tempting.
