Bingo!
A long time I was with Moseley Associates and we were
approached by a Canadian telco office, a local sort of
provider I think, about improving the signal to noise ratio
on a link used for program transmission. The circuit had
a program-channel bandwidth and some signal to noise
ratio which they wanted to improve.
They gave us a frequency range to work with, just above
the usual speech range, and a bandwidth to work within.
Trouble was that bandwidth was hardly more than twice
the upper response limit of the program to be carried.
We carefully complied with their request, knowing full
well it was doomed to failure. The telco operation was
informed of our doubts but they were insistent.
We delivered a batch of what might be called encoders,
really custom-designed SCA generators along with the
demodulators. They didn't do what the telco wanted to
do. We complied with the contract to the letter and got
paid but I suspect someone in Canada had trouble sitting
down after that little episode.
