[BC] ABC/Citadel To Suspend IBOC on AM Stations?

No I wasn't.at the time....and probably would have said the something to
the same effect at the time to simply cool the rhetoric. We don't need
personal attacks on the lists.
I'm not saying Barry (or Tom or anyone else) are completely correct or
incorrect. Though I firmly believe with Barry that IBOC as we know it now
is a flawed spectrum use premise with an even more flawed business plan and
will permanently damage the fabric of the band if not corralled and
soon. I also commented long ago that I expect the lawyers to get involved
fairly quickly. It seems that is coming to reality as well.
The deep 1st adjacent problems are murky and troublesome as WJR and WABC
and other incidents have pointed out. 2nd adjacent issues are far more
prevalent.
Maybe AM IBOC is a day-time only medium. Only to go away at sunset like so
many daytimers. Too bad....
HOWEVER, I also believe that something needs to be done to give AM stations
something more. And IBOC as a technology is showing that AM can have audio
sounding something closer to FM in terms of perceived "quality" (and I use
that term very loosely.) The codec in place today is lightyears better
than the codecs previously employed. So it is possible to have good
sounding AM. DRM also provides the same experience within the same 10Khz
channel, albeit with the loss of analog reception. I commend Tom Ray and
others who have specifically worked towards improving the band...even if
the effort in the end may prove fruitless.
Maybe some elimination of carriers might get rid of the 2nd adjacent
issue. Sure, it would result in a loss of high end and maybe some QoS
reliability. But we all know the 2nd adjacent IX is where the REAL problem
lays....
But lets stop calling people liars and throwing provocative adjectives
around.....and realize the gain being made here. Many old legacy AM plants
long in need of cleaning up are being cleaned up. That is good not only
from a band standpoint, but from a business standpoint.
